Syrup for iced coffee: 5 combinations that always work
Which syrup should you put in iced coffee, and how much? Five flavour combinations that never fail, plus the right order to mix it all well.
In iced coffee it's best to use syrup instead of sugar, because syrup is liquid and mixes well even in cold coffee. Allow 20 to 30 ml of syrup for a 300 to 400 ml glass. Pour the syrup into the glass first, stir it into the espresso, and only then add ice and cold milk.
Below you'll find the right method and five combinations that always work, from classic to fruity.
Why syrup and not sugar in iced coffee?
Sugar dissolves poorly in cold liquids and often ends up at the bottom of your glass. Syrup is already liquid and spreads evenly through the drink. And you add flavour at the same time: vanilla, caramel, hazelnut or something fruity.
In which order do you make iced coffee with syrup?
- Syrup into the glass.
- Espresso or strong coffee on top, and stir well. Warm coffee mixes more easily with syrup.
- Ice, so the coffee cools quickly.
- Cold milk or plant-based milk. Done.
Using cold brew? Then pour syrup and coffee over the ice together and stir well.
Which 5 syrup combinations always work in iced coffee?
1. Caramel: the classic
25 ml Caramel syrup, a double espresso, ice and milk. Simple and always good. See also the caramel iced coffee recipe.
2. Hazelnut and vanilla
15 ml Hazelnut and 10 ml French Vanilla. Nutty and smooth, ideal for a creamy iced latte.
3. White chocolate mocha
25 ml White Chocolate Mocha in an iced latte, finished with a little cold foam. A dessert coffee in a glass.
4. Blunilla: vanilla and blueberry
20 ml Blunilla in an iced latte with oat or regular milk. Fruity and surprising. The recipe is in the Blunilla iced latte.
5. Cookie Butter and caramel
15 ml Cookie Butter and 10 ml Caramel for a speculoos-flavoured iced latte. Top with a crumbled biscuit. More about this flavour in Speculoos syrup in your coffee.
How much syrup goes in a large iced coffee?
For a 300 to 400 ml glass, 20 to 30 ml is a good start. Combining two flavours? Split that amount between both syrups. If the ice melts quickly the drink gets a bit watery; a little extra espresso or coffee ice cubes (frozen coffee) keep the flavour stronger.
Which syrup suits cold drinks without coffee?
Fruit syrups such as strawberry, peach and blackberry are lovely in iced tea, lemonade or sparkling water. Inspiration: peach iced tea. All coffee flavours are in the coffee syrups collection.
Frequently asked questions
Should I mix the syrup with hot or cold coffee?
Preferably hot espresso, as it mixes faster. Cold brew works too, but stir a little longer.
Is iced coffee with sugar-free syrup just as sweet?
Taste is personal. Start with 20 ml and add more to taste.
Can I use syrup in a frappé?
Yes. Put espresso, syrup, milk and ice in a blender and blend briefly.
Which milk works best with syrup in iced coffee?
Any milk works. Whole milk makes a creamy iced latte, while oat milk goes nicely with nutty flavours.
